According to Gee Vaucher her work ‘skips the obvious, creeps up from behind, and boots you firmly up the arse.’ She is best known for her work with Anarcho-punk band Crass  which was seminal to the ‘protest art’ of the 1980s. Vaucher has always seen her work as a tool for social change.

On March 2^nd at 7pm - There will be a screening of the documentary about the band Crass – ‘There is No Authority but Yourself’. OnMarch 3^rd at 11am, a questions and answers session will take place with the artist and at 2pm- 6pm, a professional artist workshop in print with Gee Vaucher will take place in our print studio.

Loud Flash exhibition LA

Loud Flash: British Punk on Paper is a compelling portrait of a particular moment in British popular culture, at the bitter end of the post-war period. It tells its story through a unique collection of several hundred posters, flyers and other ephemera assembled by artist and erstwhile punk, Toby Mott.

With the passion of a true fan and an artist’s eye for an image, he has gathered the evidence of the short life and premature, messy end of British Punk. There are iconic images by artists such as Jamie Reid and Linder Sterling, as well as flyers, gig posters, and zines, crudely cut and pasted by anonymous hands. A fascinating collection of political material supplies further context of a nation of unrest, torn by extremism, recording attempts by political extremes of both left and right to co-opt the power of youth.

CRASS: selections from The Mott Collection 18th February – 18th March 2011

Toby Mott and Andrew Roth are pleased to announce the opening of CRASS, an exhibition of over 130 objects and artifacts centered on the anarchic, self-produced culture of the British band Crass, featuring artwork, albums and ephemera from The Mott Collection, including original 12” LPs and EPs, 7” singles from Crass Records, and a complete set of Crass’ iconic house zine, Inter-National Anthem.

Crass played four concerts in New York in the summer of 1977, at small, unexpected venues such as The Puerto Rican Club and the Polish Club. This exhibition represents the first opportunity since that brief visit for New Yorkers to experience the unique visual and aural mayhem that is Crass’ trademark. The material featured in this exhibition spans the high period of Crass’ endeavors, from 1978 to 1984, and constitutes a special segment of The Mott Collection. In addition to his own artistic activities as part of the Grey Organization, collector and curator Toby Mott spent much of his youth diligently collecting and preserving the artifacts of the punk movement in Britain. Major portions of his collection were featured in the exhibition “Loud Flash: British Punk on Paper” at MUSAC in Léon, Spain, in March 2010 and more recently at Haunch of Venison Gallery last fall in London

I would really appreciate anyone who can help us out by spreading the word on this. Please re-post, link, whatever.

Singer urgently needed.  We are looking for a female singer to join The Last Supper tour.  Unfortunately Beki has decided that she cannot continue to tour with us due to family commitments.  We are absolutely gutted, but determined not to let this set-back get us down.  So we are currently seeking a strong female vocalist who is capable of joining our little family, and of representing the Crass material with the heart and spirt it deserves (particularly the material from Penis Envy).  She must be available for an immediate audition, plus rehearsals in London or Peterborough in January and February, and then for our USA/Canadian tour (3 weeks in March), Australia/NZ tour (3-4 weeks in April & May), possibly Japan or a few others during the summer, and our finale show in London late 2011.  Obviously a clean passport/record will be required for visas etc.   Interested parties should please submit the following topunks@southern.com: (1) one mp3 track featuring your vocals (2) short bio (3) photo (4) name, address, contact email & phone numbers (5) any links to extra music, info etc that you’d like us to consider.
